How do I get post excerpts on all but the single post pages?

Hi,

I’ve been attempting to change the layout on my posts to excerpts…I’ve now only got my blog posts titles showing, but I cannot figure out how to show a 20-30 word excerpt of a blog post to show. I think I understand what I need to do (i.e. I know some code needs to be placed in the loop for this to occur), but like I said, I’ve only managed to hose it up so that only the post titles are showing on my blogs homepage..Do I do this in the index.php or function.php of my theme? Or?
