I have WordPress 1.5 and Coppermine installed.
    Server uses MySQL database.

    1) If I decide to dump my server and do a clean reinstall of WordPress 1.5 only (without Coppermine), is it possible to just backup my WordPress data in the database and “not backup’ the Coppermine data?

    2) And if so, then after I reinstall WordPress back on the server, can I restore only the WordPress data back to the new database that is created prior to installing WordPress? (and how would the database passwords be affected?)

    Thanks

  • 1 – Yes.
You will need to only select the WP tables when you backup.

2 – Not sure what you mean …….

    ok, I’ll try again.

    2) Explained differently:

In a clean install, you need to create a database before installing WordPress and then add the database info (and new password) to the wp-config file.

In order to dump everything and do a clean install:

    a) Do I create a “new database” and then restore my old WordPress data to the new database? – (and will the “old database” password, that I assume is somewhere in the backup file, conflict with the “new database” password?)

    b) Or, do I just backup my WordPress data in the existing database as you indicated, and then just delete all the database info in the database – keeping the existing database in place – and then install WordPress and restore the WordPress data?

    thanks

Backup the entire database (just in case)
Backup ONLY the WordPress tables separately
    Select the Coppermine tables
    DROP the COPPERMINE tables

That will leave you with just WordPress in place.

If your target was to get rid of Coppermine and leave just WP, that’s about the quickest way to do it.

So, I’m better off not doing a clean install then.

(although I would have preferred to dump the entire database because I have other old files besides coppermine in there)

Ok – thanks for your help

You could do a clean install, but it depends on your goal, and what a clean install would have that this way would not ?

I was just trying to get rid of all orphaned files on my server and in the database from several other programs that I’ve been testing in the past – so I thought I would just dump everything and do a clean reinstall of just WP 1.5 – and somehow restore my old posts etc to the new installation.

    OOHhhhhhhhhhh!
    Right then !

    In that case …..

Do what I said above, then delete the files from the server – NOT the database, but KEEP the wp-config.php
That way, the new WP does not need installing and will connect just fine.

    Please do backup though !

That’s exactly the info that I was looking for.

    Thanks podz
