• When I logged into manage my site today I saw that there are now three more theme updates, 2014-2016. In the past, I have been ignoring the 2013 updates because I read some reviews that stated it messes up mobile viewing. Has anyone had any experience updating the themes – good and bad? This is what I am currently running:
    2013 – 1.6 upgrade to 2.0
    2014 – 1.7 upgrade to 1.8
    2015 – 1.5 upgrade to 1.6
    2016 – 1.2 upgrade to 1.3

I am not very techy at this website stuff and am not sure what the idea behind updating these are. My theme is Sela so I do not know how these even effect my site.

Have you made any edits to the theme files directly? If not, updating should have no visible effect.

If you made edits to the theme files, I’d suggest moving your changes into a child theme, otherwise you’ll lose your changes upon updating.

I’m not sure what you’re referring to, but updating Sela should not cause any issues, mobile or otherwise.

Keeping your theme up-to-date is strongly recommended to ensure you get bug fixes, security updates, and updates to keep the theme compatible with WordPress core.

Let us know how it goes.

What do you mean by “made edits to the theme files directly”? Do you mean CSS? If so yes I have made a number of changes.

How do I move my changes into a child theme?

I think I updated the 2013 and ran into issues, searched on forums and read about some people who had the same issue as me. It mucked up mobile viewing on my site when I updated.

I mean did you edit any of the files within:

    /wp-content/sela/

I took a look at your CSS changes and it looks like you used the Jetpack Custom CSS module to add your custom CSS. This is good, because it means that your CSS changes will be protected and won’t be overwritten when you update the theme.

So I should have no issues running all the updates then? If I do should I just revert back to my backup before the updates?

If you’re nervous, you could download a backup copy of the sela folder on your server to your hard drive via FTP.

If you have any issues after upgrading, I’d suggest posting here and we can help you troubleshoot, rather than reverting.
