Support » Plugin: footnotes » Cant' get it working for WP pages

  • WP 4.4.4
    Suffusion Theme 4.4.9 (child theme)
    bbPress 2.5.10-6063

This website does not use “posts”; content not intended for discussion is presented by standard WP “pages.” Material intended for discussion is handled by bbPress.

Does your plugin conflict with bbPress?

In the past, I have relied on other footnote plugins that no longer work for pages (they didn’t work for bbPress topics/replies).

The first one used the shortcodes [note] and [/note] to enclose the citation.

So I set up the new settings to replace the old ones. It didn’t work: Instead of displaying numerals in the text, only dots appear. Sometimes the citation displayed by hovering the dot is truncated; sometimes it is invisible.

Next I tried to replace the settings for an even older plugin: “((” and “)).” The same thing happened again:

In both cases, I was careful to avoid entering a spacebar advance between the text and the tagged content.

Am I doing something wrong? If so, please help me to fix the problem so I can use your plugin.

    Many thanks, Anna

There’s something odd going on here that I can’t explain. The dotted text, when you hover over it – where is the displayed text coming from as it doesn’t match anything in your summary. I’m also at a loss as to why there’s no space just before the dotted text as it’s clearly in the HTML – this sounds as if it’s a stylesheet issue with your theme.

To me, it looks as if footnotes is being overridden by something else until the point at which the summary is produced – maybe something else intercepting the footnotes (which is a pretty standard method of adding them).

It’s a pain, I know, but could you try deactivating your other plugins one-at-a-time to see if it suddenly starts working again?

Lastly, the Suffusion theme that you’re using has a lot of built-in features. If you switch to a standard theme does the issue still arise?

Thanks so much for trying to help me! I have a theory about a possible conflict with another plugin.

I’ll test it ASAP and report back to you (and to the developer of the suspected conflicting one).

Oh HOW I wish for an integrated plugin that could seamlessly handle ALL “tool-tip/hover” footnotes, acronyms and related images—including linked text terms!

Thanks again for your work on this plugin so promising for my needs, Anna
