I found a workaround on this. I used the “Excerpt/Post number(s)” setting on the control panel to limit the number of ads displayed on the home page. This might even increase my sales. I’d still like to see the previous functionality returned so that sidebar widgets can be displayed on the homepage without showing ads under excerpts. Thanks.
Widget can not be displayed on homepage unless it is enabled for homepage.
Widget can be displayed in a widget position (if you put it there) and the plugin doesn’t know about this (widget position is theme feature).
But I’ll consider adding filter/counter limitation also for widgets.
I think you misunderstood what I was talking about.
In short, the Homepage option now governs ANY display of Ad Inserter widgets or shortcodes on the homepage, no matter how they are placed.
In the previous version, I was able to place an ad widget on the theme’s sidebar (under Appearance –> Widgets) and have it display on every page, including the home page, without enabling any ads under the homepage excerpts. The Homepage checkbox remained blank but the theme’s sidebar widget showed up on the homepage anyway.
Now, the theme’s sidebar widget will not show up unless the Homepage option is checked. This results in ads also showing up under the excerpts.
I also tried placing a text widget on the sidebar and inserting a shortcode into it but it wouldn’t display unless the Homepage option was checked.
If you have a code block only for a widget then it behaves like before if you enable page types (homepage,…).
Enabling homepage may only cause additional insertions if you are also using shortcodes, PHP function or automatic display for this block.
Are you sure you were using this code block only for a widget?
It would help to clarify the problem if you post screenshot of the settings used.

The basic problem is that widget no longer shows up unless the Homepage checkbox in Ad Inserter is checked. That option causes ads to show up under all the <i>excerpts</i> on the homepage unless I use the Exerpt / Post Number(s) setting as shown.

OK, now I understand.
But this block is configured primarily for automatic display after content on posts and pages.
I have some ideas how to solve such problem.
I’ll try to add options for widgets to ignore block settings and use only code.
