Cancel membership sometimes does not work

I’ve been having a hard time trying to pinpoint the location of an error (for lack of a proper word) that causes a situation where a user cancels its membershop and PMPro doesn’t get the cancelation, and allows the user to keep using paid content. Like I said, it doesn’t happen all the time, it happens with something like 5% of memberships canceled…but it’s a PITA because I have to cancel manually.

Any ideas or pointers?

The Cancel behavior depends on which gateway you’re using and how you have it configured (and where the user cancels, ie in your WP site or in PayPal if that’s what you’re using).

Because of similar issues, we have implemented a process on our site where we monitor cancels so that we can jump in and handle them manually if needed. Yeah it kinda sucks but that’s where we ended up.

If a user cancel’s at PayPal, they will send a message to the PMPro IPN Handler, which will try to cancel the membership on the WP/PMPro side. Make sure that your IPN Handler is functioning correctly for this:

There is also a situation where PMPro can’t cancel a PayPal subscription if it is in “pending” status, e.g. if a user cancels immediately after checkout. In this case again PayPal will send a message to the IPN and if PMPro can process that we send an email to admin that we couldn’t cancel subscription. We have some updates planned to close the gap on cases where PMPro and PayPal go out of sync. But you also should double check the IPN stuff. Let us know how it goes.
