• I have created a variable product but cannot get the inventory setup to work correctly.

Under inventory, I have checked manage stock and set the quantity to 30. I also enabled allow backorders (notify customer).

Under variations, I only set the price. I did not check manage stock as I dont want individual stock levels for each variation. I only want stock managed at a product level.

Can someone please clarify if this is achievable and what settings I should be using to do this?

  • Once you are in the Variable Product you are wanting to make these changes to, this is what you want to do..

Go to the Product Data Box –> Inventory –> Manage Stock (check) ‘Enable stock management at product level’ –> Next.. Add Attributes in the Attributes tab if you haven’t already –> Next.. go to the Variations tab –> Under each product (check) ‘Manage stock?’ –> Under ‘Stock Quantity’ you will leave that area blank.

Leaving that field blank in ‘Stock Quantity’ allows you to manage the stock from the parent product, which is the product before any variations have been made. So the product has ten available, whether the buyer chooses the hat in red, blue, yellow, or green, the stock will go down one regardless.

I tried that but you can’t leave the stock level on a product variation blank. As soon as you save the product, it changes to say stock level as 0 (zero).

If manage stock is unchecked at variation level, the box should be hidden from view. Sounds like you may have a plugin breaking this or you’re on an old version.

Yes, you are right, should just leave that box unchecked.
