    The first lessons of my courses are free and I would like it if potential students, could take these free courses and mark the lessons as complete. Then when they decide to take the course,they have already marked the first bit as complete. I was also thinking, I could then award them an achievement for completing the first lesson, perhaps increasing interest to taking the full course. However, it looks like the free sections of a course don’t have the possibility to mark them as complete. Is this correct, or am I missing something? Sincerely, Nelly

  • @nellyw,

    I can see how this would be useful and you are mostly correct that it is not possible. But if you think about it a bit differently, this is possible.

    First off, free lessons let non-logged in users read the content of a lesson, since they’re not logged in we have no way of knowing who they are and then we can’t record the “completion” without a user to associate that completion with. This is kind of arguable, we could try to store the completion on the user’s machine with local storage or a cookie or something, but this has the potential to be inaccurate.

    So, for general purposes, we *need* a user. Even if we did add the ability to mark lessons as complete, the user would still NEED to be registered in order for us to record the completion (and award an achievement or do anything else).

    I’d recommend making your entire course free, which will require registration. This will allow you to do all the things you want to do. Perhaps, if the registration is a sticking point, you could have a free course with the first lesson free. Make this a small introductory course and make it a pre-req for another course (which can be paid). That way you can use your course for leadgen with a low cost of entry to your users. You can award them along the way during the free course, and then entice them into the rest of the course, which is another paid course.

    Hope that helps,

    Thank you for your thoughtful answer. I have of course, thought about it as well. I understand that the potential student needs to register and be logged in, but I can tell them to do that in the introduction to the course. Cutting the course up, or making a small introductory course is not what I want. The first lesson has always been free. This format has worked for me for over 10 years and I tried smaller introductory courses and other ways, but this way works best. If it’s not possible, I will show in my introduction video, that they can take the first lesson for free and once they are registered students, they can mark lessons as complete etc. I also tried if I could make the free part a membership, but I believe that it’s not possible to assign just one section of a course to a membership?

    @nellyw,

    You’re welcome and I’m sorry this doesn’t appear to resolve your issue…

    You cannot assign sections or lessons to a membership, only the entire course.

    However, assigning the membership would do — essentially — the same thing as my suggestion as it would require registration prior to taking the free lesson(s).

    I don’t think I’ll be able to resolve this one for you with core functions given the your current needs.

    Let me know if there’s anything else I can help with.

    I understand. It’s not a big problem. Will think about it some more. Thanks for your extremely fast response.
