Review Please

Hi,
I would love to have my site Nice2All reviewed. I blog about anything related to WordPress.
I would appreciate a good honest review. No need to pull any punches.
Thanks.
Lyndi.

I usually like minimalistic themes but, on this site, a bit of background color wouldn’t go amiss, in my opinion. Mainly because I found it very cluttered in the upper half of pages and, therefore, hard to focus on the post excerpts or the blocks in the sidebar.
Some very subtle shading on the sidebar and the page nav links on the bottom (maybe as low as #f8f8f8) would, I think, break the visual clutter down a little and increase readability. Dropping the text down to #606060 would also help to reduce the glare. I find #222 on a white background a little too bright for comfort.
Hope that helps.
Lyndi, the lack of background color works for me. Like esmi, I like things simple and clean. When I first opened the site I as taken-back a bit with all the large images and lost sight of the actual Posts for a moment. I almost blew right back out, but after a short moment I was able to visually define what everything was. Perhaps the suggested light shading would help people like me. I am a “just the facts” type and need to be able to distinguish the posts from the other ‘stuff’ really quickly. I bookmarked the site because it looks like it could be a resource for learing more about WordPress. Good job, and thanks for the informative articles.
Thanks guys. I will take your advice to heart and see what I can do about the situation.
Nice design. I think the colors are fine. I like it subtle.
I think you could work with the typography a bit more. The spacing between elements such as the title of posts, and the previous posts and other elements is a little too uniform for my tastes. The grouping of content should be more visually obvious. If I read it, we know what goes with what, but I should not have to read it to get that. Try squinting at the page and see it in chunks. Add or remove spacing in the css between elements to get stuff to chunk together or separate more, as appropriate.
Mind you, I don’t think you need to do a lot to achieve this. These are minor tweaks, but sometimes the smallest adjustments can make a big difference. Since your design is subtle (which I like), then it is even more important to get these types of things dead on.
I think a general problem with blogs is that there are conventions that are accepted within the blogging community that actually break design principles. I think you are better off following the design principles. Here is an example:
On your friend page, you have the title friends and then an google add space, then the list of friends. I understand the need for advertising, as unfortunate as it is from a design perspective, but can you at least put it above the label “Friends”? It would be even better if it could go in some sort of separate box, maybe with an outline or background color to set it off and say, “this is something different”. (Also on your friends page the bullets are too far away from the text, although I like the line height between bullet items)
One last nit to pick, and this one is purely personal taste on my part, but I think underlining is generally ugly. Given all the ways in CSS to make something stand out as a link, underlining is generally the very last one I would pick. But that is up to you.
I hope that helps.
@wmmead That does help, thanks. You have given me a lot to go and play with. If I knew I was going to get this much constructive criticism I would have asked for a review long ago.
