I’m wondering if Google indexes the Nextgen tags being used.

As far as I tested it at my test blog they are not index by google…

Does it depend on your code or Google’s, or a combination of the two, that tags aren’t searched through by Google? And do you think it will work in the future?

Tags are not shown in your frontend, so they are not indexed.
