I am trying to import my blog posts from a blog I had over on WordPress.com to my own installation on a hosted site. However, when I try to do this, I get the following error message: “Can’t select database.” I’ve also quoted more details about the message below. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks much.

We were able to connect to the database server (which means your username and password is okay) but not able to select the username_wrdp1 database.

    * Are you sure it exists?
    * Does the user username_wrdp1 have permission to use the username_wrdp1 database?
    * On some systems the name of your database is prefixed with your username, so it would be like username_name_wrdp1. Could that be the problem?

After checking the various options, it appears everything is correct, but I’m a newbie, so I’m not entirely sure.

  • The questions that it asks there are good ones. I would ask about permissions assigned (this is important and something many people assume is done when they create the database) and that the full database name / username is listed correctly.

Does your wp-config.php file reflect the right information?

Thanks for responding. I figured out what I was doing wrong. I was attempting to upload the exported WordPress.com file to my file manager (via my web host’s cPanel) instead of uploading it directly through the hosted WordPress blog.
