  • I (and a few friends) are in the process of trying to build a subscription-based site that I’m thinking might need to be constructed as a multisite? I’m hoping for some feedback. Here are the broad brushstrokes:

The business will essentially have 3 separate, but possibly connected areas of business.

1.) Resources for ministers, including sermon outlines, reference materials, overhead slides for each sermon, etc.

2.) Daily devotional curriculum and lessons for kids, 3 separate age groups. We’ll be using an LMS plugin for this portion.

3.) Music lessons on how to learn to play an instrument (piano, organ, guitar, bass and drums). This segment will also have additional resources for musicians, including forums at some point.

These 3 channels will all be under the main company umbrella, but will have their own “names” as well. It might be simpler to run different themes for these areas rather than trying to customize one theme to fit all 3 differently. Also, subscribers will have a choice in membership tier…they could choose to only have access to one of these areas, all of these areas, or perhaps a combination of 2– requiring a membership plugin (currently planning to use Memberpress).

Here are my questions in summary…

    A. Given the overall structure I’ve outlined, should I be thinking of a multisite rather than trying to run this all through one web site?

    B. Does anyone know if MemberPress can be configured in a way where users would actually have access to different sites? I need to be able to have one master member database using Memberpress, not 3 separate ones. I have the same question about BuddyPress…can I use one network installation to run social profiles for all the sites?

    C. With a multisite, is it possible that I can install different themes in the individual sites?

So sorry for the lengthy post, but I’m in over my head on this and I’m hoping for some guidance. Thanks in advance?

I would definitely NOT use multisite for this! Especially for the music lessons site that will be topically not as related.

Multisite administration and limits can complicate a lot of things, and if you are talking SSLs for payments, membership sections & content control, etc., that’s already a lot of complications & limits.
