2.9 upgrade failed

    I tried to upgrade to 2.9, but it failed saying mySQL needed to be version 4.1.2 or higher and my host is running 4.0.27. My host is GoDaddy. I would have thought they would run the latest version of everything. What can I do at this point to upgrade? Anything?

    my bad – I upgraded to MySQL 5.0 but still no success – hopefully this will straighten out soon.

    Guys found the solution.

    Deactivate all plugins – no need to create any DBs in MYSQL5.

    Then try upgrade…

    Tried to up grade from 2.2 to 2.9. Total failure. Got the error message

    I tried to upgrade automatically , I maybe got precocious because my guy who usually helps me with this stuff has been less than pleased with my always bothering him for help and I have with success installed plugins and so I thought this was an easy thing to do , this IS WHAT my DASHBOARD looks like when I log on …HELP HELP HELP!!!!!

    The modules on this screen can be arranged in several columns. You can select the number of columns from the Screen Options tab.

    Most of the modules on this screen can be moved. If you hover your mouse over the title bar of a module you’ll notice the 4 arrow cursor appears to let you know it is movable. Click on it, hold down the mouse button and start dragging the module to a new location. As you drag the module, notice the dotted gray box that also moves. This box indicates where the module will be placed when you release the mouse button.

    The same modules can be expanded and collapsed by clicking once on their title bar and also completely hidden from the Screen Options tab.

    I was more or less able to solve the MySQL issue, but still have another lingering problem (see below).

    I use 1and1 as my host and was getting the same error many people here are getting about having the wrong version of MySQGL. I had to change my package to a different Linux package that supported MySQL 5, which I did.

    After changing my package, I exported my MySQL database using the WordPress built-in backup feature under the tools menu.

    I then went into my 1and1 site administration and created a NEW MySQL5 database, and imported the file that I backed up from WordPress.

    I then edited my wp-config.php file with my new database name and username and uploaded that to my server.

    I was then able to successfully upgrade to WordPress 2.9.

    However, I’m having an odd issue with some “junk” appearing in some of my posts in the form of a question mark icon. Not sure exactly what’s causing this, but I think it has something to do with some of the MySQL 4 code not converting 1:1 to the MySQL5 code… something about line breaks, or UTF8… or something?

    If anyone has any thoughts on this issue, it would be most appreciated.

    I too had the same issue while i uploaded RAW SQL data to PHPMYADMIN. You will need to remove them manually. I dont think there is a way.

    sftp and ssh work fine, but when I try a WP 2.9 automatic upgrade with the FTPS (SSL) option, it fails to recognize my login info and displays this error:

    Error: There was an error connecting to the server, Please verify the settings are correct.

    Yet again, ssh, Fetch, Cyberduck all work fine.

    Client: MacBook Pro, Snow Leopard
    Server: CentOS 5.3 – PHP: 5.3.1 – MySQL: 5.2.3

    My problem was fixed by my amazingly patient admin guy …he simply deactivated the 2.9 plugin and I am all good now …so kudos for Minshew Networks …and now I know one more thing about WordPress…

    I am unable to upgrade to 2.9. The screen says “unpacking update”. I left the computer on and came back two hours later and nothing had changed – still “unpacking update.”

    Since WP doesn’t upgrade, I’ll probably have to stick with the old version, right? Would that be a problem? If so, can you recommend somebody who would know how to upgrade.

    Not sure which version I have now. I tried to upgrade to 2.8 once, and had the same problem. If anybody knows where I can find some help with this issue, that would be great.

    Just wanted to say thanks to all who posted on this thread. I was able to figure out and get my install up and running. I had the exact same problem as @manigaultgentile and deactivated all my plug-ins, upgraded, and reactivated like a charm.

    To upgrade automatically to a new wordpress version you simply have to go into your WP-settings.php file, and on line 13, change

    define (‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ‘8M’) to define (‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ’64M’), or to some even greater number.

    You will have to do this each time you upgrade, as the new WP-settings.php file is always at 8M
