• Hi,

I’m trying to use your plug-in for a lab website but I am having trouble getting citations to appear. The only thing that appears is a list that begins and ends at 1 as well as the Search PubMed link.

Also, every now and then I also get this compilation error on the website:

Warning: simplexml_load_file(): http%3A%2F%2Feutils.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%2Fentrez%2Feutils%2Fesearch.fcgi%3Fdb%3Dpubmed%26term%3DCalhoun%2BPS%26retmax%3D10:1: parser error : Document is empty in /home/beckha6/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-pubmed-reflist/class.wpPubMedRefList.php on line 191

Thanks a lot and I really look forward to using this plug-in.

First, did you try saving a format and reloading? I’ve been meaning to fix that, but have been swamped. There are some other help threads here about how to do that.

wrt the simplexml error, I suspect it’s a separate issue that I should look into.

I am currently using the NIH style and have tried the solution in this thread: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/new-install-empty-citations?replies=6, but there are still no citations on the webpage.

Maybe a query problem? Can you post the query you are using and how you’re using the shortcode?

then I can test on my test site.

The query I’m testing out is very basic. It’s simply “Beckham JC”, and the shortcode is [pmid-refs key=beckham limit=10]. I just copy and paste the shortcode into a page on the website.

Is there another way that I should be using the shortcode?

hmm… I just tested it on my laptop test site.

Under the tools menu I have an entry where the key is “beckham” and the query is “”Beckham JC” (without the quote marks). I put the shorttag in a test post and I get:

It’s got the hyperlinks etc. So there’s nothing wrong with the query or the shortcode.

Try making a second query and saving. Sometimes it’s dumb about the order of updates to the settings.

I just made a new key “calhoun” with the query “Calhoun PS”, and I still cannot get anything to appear. Could it perhaps be related to the compilation error that I was getting earlier?

    Plugin Author jimhu

    (@jimhu)

Maybe. If you have access to the mySQL database, you can also look at the wp-options table and check that the two options: wp_pubmed_reflist and wp_pubmed_reflist_styles are there.

I’m also wondering if there is something blocking access to the pubmed web services from your server. Are you on a hosting service of some kind?

    Thread Starter cl332

    (@cl332)

So it looks like our host doesn’t allow us to use fopen for XML files, but we switched over to the curl option. However, we still don’t have anything appearing. Any thoughts on that?

    Thread Starter cl332

    (@cl332)

Actually just got it working! For some reason one of the more recent keys that I created was not working. However, switching to curl got the plug-in to work in the end. Thanks a lot for your help!

    Plugin Author jimhu

    (@jimhu)

Glad you got it to work. Not sure why it didn’t switch over to curl automatically. I guess my test for url fopen isn’t good enough.
