The Jetpack plugin does indeed require you to connect to a WordPress.com account to be fully activated.

To do so, you will have to create a WordPress.com account here:
    https://wordpress.com/start/jetpack

Please note that WordPress.com accounts are different from the account you use to administrate your blog. WordPress.com and self-hosted blogs available through WordPress.org are two different entities.
Please check out the following links to learn the differences.

    http://get.wp.com/

Once you’ve created your account, you’ll be able to use it to connect your site to WordPress.com.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks Jeremy.
I know there’s a difference between the .org and .com

If I create an account at WordPress.com, can I use the Jetpack plugin at my .org account? Since I created my website at wordpress.org.

Yes, you can. The account you’ll create on WordPress.com is only there to allow you to start using features from the WordPress.com cloud on your own .org site.

This answers my question as well. Thank you.
It’s just a shame that .org and .com accounts can’t be merged/reconciled. I want to maintain a consistent username across everything to do with my website and my business but it looks like I can’t use that same username on a wordpress.com account because it’s already tied to a wordpress.org account. Oh well.

You should be able to use the same username on the 2 services, having a username in one place doesn’t stop you from using the same username in the other.

If the username you’re trying to use for a new WordPress.com account isn’t available, it’s because it’s already in use by somebody else. That somebody else might actually be you! Did you ever sign up to services like Akismet, VaultPress, or Gravatar? If you did, you created a WordPress.com account in the process.

It might be worth entering the username you’re trying to use here:
    https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword

This way, if that username is tied to one of your email addresses, you’ll receive an email from WordPress.com allowing you to reset your password and log in to your old account. You’ll then be able to use it for Jetpack.

    I hope this helps.
