WordPress versus WordPress MU

    Currently using : WordPress MU 2.7.1
    Buddypress 1.0.2
    BBpress 1.0

    Guys and Gals,

    I keep getting yelled at for reviewing WP plugins in regards to how they work with WPMU? Now, many of you will say, well WP is totally a different type than WPMU? Then tell me, what in the world is running the WordPress.com website??? It is WPMU.

    Now another argumentation about this is that, WPMU itself says to check each WP plugin to see if it works with the WPMU system.

    Example:

    After a WPMU installation, under Admin Dashboard in Plugins:

    at the bottom:

    Get More Plugins

    You can find additional plugins for your site by using the new Plugin Browser/Installer functionality, Or by browsing the “WordPress Plugin Directory” directly and installing manually.

    To manually install a plugin you generally just need to upload the plugin file into your /home/account/public_html/wp-content/plugins directory.

    Once a plugin has been installed, you may activate it here.

    So, it has the link that points directly to the WordPress.org website???

    The WPMU doesn’t have its own plugins section, especially if there are problems with a specific plugin. It does however have a plugins forum area. Which WPMU site admins can talk about enhancing or fixing certain plugins. However, WPMU typically points you right back to WP plugins?

    So, are WPMU site users not suppose to be reviewing Plugins or using the plugins on the wordpress.org site? Since WPMU themselves point to most plugins being on wordpress.org?

    I realize that not all WP plugins are going to work with WPMU, and that is between WP and WPMU to work that out. But, as a site admin of my own site that is using WPMU, I am trying to figure out which plugins work the best, and WPMU points to wordpress.org being the one to go to for plugins?

    So, am I right or wrong?

    Which plugins are we WPMU users suppose to use, when WPMU themselves are pointing to the WP plugin repositories???

    WP website owners should consider creating a field for each plugin in their repository that states whether or not it will work with WPMU. Rather, then us WMPU users that leave WPMU reviews about each plugin on WP receive nasty responses from other members.

    So, is WP not the same organization as WPMU? Are they two separate entities?

    Guys and Gals, please realize it is WPMU that is pointing us to use WP plugins, if that is not the case, then please tell us now.

    youre missing the point of the “yelling”.

    these support forums are NOT for MU. MU users have their own forum —

    the 2 pieces of software are vastly different.

    the simple fact that the forums are NOT shared should be enough evidence of the distinction.

    I realized 1/2 way into your posts earlier what was going on with your threads — that you were simply reviewing the plugins. Realize though, that issues that you might have with a plugin need to be addressed over on the MU forums — not because anyone here is elitist, but because thats where MU support is offered, thats where that user-base hangs out.

    I realize that not all WP plugins are going to work with WPMU, and that is between WP and WPMU to work that out.

    No it isnt. Its for the plugin authors to work out.

    Ok, I will agree with you there.

    Please, keep in mind that us newbies that come across WordPress or WordPress MU and are being directed to utilize WordPress plugins, can be somewhat confusing.

    I notice at the WordPress MU forums that they have a section dedicated to plugin fixes, which to be honest I didn’t know about until you had stated that I was posting in the wrong forum.

    At this point, I am just testing and reviewing wordpress plugins to see if they work in wordpress mu, as wordpress mu has suggested in their plugins area.

    I do wish that WordPress MU would consider having an area that is similar to wordpress plugin area on this website, that at least points to certain plugins that are known to work with WordPress MU. As for support forums about each plugin, it would be nice to see a way for WordPress MU to have their own forums similar to wordpress site that talk about each plugin on their website.

    Currently, WordPress MU only has it to where you have to post about the plugin on their forums, which can get easily lost.

    WordPress.org has the idea right, where they keep the posts about each plugin together. I wonder why WordPress MU website hasn’t done this yet.

    I am just trying to make it easier for WordPress MU users to know whether or not these wordpress plugings will work with the WordPress MU system.

    It’s the same message that is in single-WP, and only viewable to Site Admins.

    It’s for *anything* to do with plugins. If you want to review for the WPMU audience, you’d be far better off to do it in those forums, as many WPMU power users do not come over here.

    There are non-official plugin repositories for WPMU. They are mentioned all over the WPMU forums.

    There is also a wpmu and wordpressmu tag in the official plugin repo.

    And finally, the codebases are merging, so it’s quite possible the whole mu side (forums etc) will be merged together as well. Dunno yet.

    Becasue the plugin repo is auto hooked up to this forum. Anything tagged WPMU still gets pointed here. Anything in the backend of WPMU gets pointed here. So yes, it’s slightly messed up, but when you download WPMU from that section of the site, the forum tab is clearly visible. The readme also points to the right forums.

    He is correct. If we go over to the MU forums, it gets sent back to here because wordpress wants only 1 location for this and you should also know WordPress and WordPress MU are merging so this is making it easier for them once the merge happens to have everything in one place. Im sure the OP thanks you for trying to point him in the right direction. Sometimes posters just get made of a post they think is in the wrong area and do not give them the correct area.
