• Resolved paddlepult

    (@paddlepult)

I have been working on a new web site all day, and while I have managed several WordPress sites that came to me complete, this is the first time I have installed one and started from scratch.

I am using a child for Zerif Lite. I have created a new page that I am unable to add to the menu for navigation.

I should be able to do this through Appearance/Menus, and I have been able to do this earlier today. When I go to edit the menu, there are no pages showing in the Pages section on the left. I remember earlier today there was a list and I could pick the page I wanted to add. Now it just says “no items.”

I have tried a number of different things to figure this out, including changing back to regular Zerif Lite in case creation of the child and adding of some code there is what complicated things, but it has been no help.

I would sure appreciate any insight on this. Thanks in advance for your help. The site is brand new and not live, so I’m not sure how I would provide a link to show, especially because the problem is in my Dashboard.

  • Try deactivating all plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

do you mean that even with the parent theme you can’t see any pages?

I tried disabling all of the plugins (there were 4) but the pages are still missing from the menu customization.

And yes, I did roll back to the parent Zerif Lite and even an entirely different template, but the problem is still there no matter what template I use.

Thanks for trying to help. Any other thoughts?

stupid question, did you make any changes in WP core files?

or changed anything in htacces, wp-config ?

you are sure that the pages menu is there but there are no items (pages), right?

I am new enough that making changes like that would be exceedingly scary to me, so no.

The only changes I have made are through the regular interface provided by the theme, except I made this child that has 2 changes in it – one for opacity of the image, and one for modifying the size of the media icons in the footer (both in style.css), and adding 2 social media in footer.php.

I wish I could show a picture. The Pages box is there, and below it the Custom Links, Posts, and Categories boxes. But in the Pages box, it just says “no items” and has no tabs. Before, the Pages box had 3 tabs. Can’t remember what they were, but one was for searching up your pages to choose from. Now those are gone.

Thanks for helping me with this, guys.

    no worries 🙂

another silly one, is your page published? and do you have any published pages at all? (in wp>pages)

    Thread Starter paddlepult

    (@paddlepult)

It is published, but private, because the site is not polished enough to release into the wild yet. Maybe you can see it if I give you a link?

When this happened to me the first time, I tried undoing a lot of the stuff I did, but nothing fixed it.

So I deleted the WP installation and reinstalled.

Went back in, made my pages, menu worked fine. 2 hours of building later, not working again.

it looks that you cannot add private pages in your menu. Please use other pages to create your menu.

These were not private when the problem happened. They were unpublished. And unpublished pages were easily added to the menu in the beginning, and now they are not. I only published them because forum support asked me to.

Well, just for giggles, I went in and changed one of the pages NOT on the menu to Public to see if it changed anything, and I was able to see it on the Menu customizer. Page box and tabs magically returned to normal.

So, I don’t know why I could do it unpublished, and then couldn’t, but it appears publishing solves the problem, so I’ll take it.

    Thanks for your help.

    Lisa

i dont believe you can add unpublished pages in the menu, not 100% about it.

Well, I did. At the beginning. All of my pages were unpublished, and I created the menu from them. But after working on the site for a while, this ability broke.

    But it’s good now.

    Thanks.
