    Hi,

I just noticed that the Mailchimp for WordPress sign-up forms have disappeared from two different WordPress websites that I have. I’m using the latest version of WordPress and the latest version of Mailchimp for both websites. Any idea what the problem might be? The Mailchimp sign-up forms have been reliable until now.

I just figured out the source of the problem. Two adblockers (Adblocker and Adblocker Plus) that I loaded onto my Chrome and Safari browsers were making the Mailchimp for WordPress sign-up form disappear. On Chrome, by turning off Adblocker Plus, I was able to make the sign-up forms reappear. On Safari, I had to turn off both Adblocker and Adblocker Plus in order to make the sign-up forms reappear. This is worrisome, because I know that many if not most people these days use adblockers.

My websites also display sign-up forms generated by other plugins. For example, I use a Ninja Forms plugin to generate email contact forms on my websites, and I use Easy Digital Downloads plugins to generate e-commerce forms. The forms generated by Ninja and Easy Digital Downloads were unaffected by the adblockers. The adblockers deleted only the Mailchimp for WordPress sign-up forms.

Question: How can I prevent adblockers from deleting my Mailchimp for WordPress sign-up forms? Or is there anything you can do at your end to prevent this problem?

    Thanks!

    Hello D,

I myself use AdblockerPlus for Chrome and was not able to replicate the issue. Can you please share a link to your website where I can test the form?

Thanks very much. My website is found at painopolis.com. The Mailchimp for WordPress sign-up form is located in the bottom righthand corner of the homepage. Also, on that same website, there’s another Mailchimp for WordPress sign-up form located at https://painopolis.com/free-e-newsletter/

I did another test again today, and yes, the adblockers on Chrome and Safari are still deleting the Mailchimp for WordPress sign-up forms. When I turned the adblockers off, the sign-up forms reappeared. Then I tried using the Firefox browser, which doesn’t have any adblockers, and the forms show up there.

Thanks again for looking into this.

    Hello D,

Do you have any custom settings/filters in your AdBlocker Plus add-on? Also would it be possible for you to share with us screenshots of each of the settings tab in “AdBlocker Plus”?

    Hi,

No, I’m not using any custom settings or filters. I’m using Adblock and Adblock Plus exactly as they were when I added them to my browsers. I haven’t customized them or changed their settings. (In my earlier message, I mistakenly called them Adblocker and Adblocker Plus. Their names are actually Adblock and Adblock Plus). To see my settings for Adblock and Adblock Plus, just go here:

    https://painopolis.com/adblockers-that-i-use/

Then click on the individual screenshots to make them bigger and more readable.

    Thanks!

    Similar issue here.
I just installed the plugin. I created a form and saved it. But after closing the window I could not find it. Now it is even worst – I cannot create a new form because my fields do not appear; I click on renew list, but nonetheless they don’t appear.

    🙁

@klehder I would request you to please create a new support ticket instead of replying to previous tickets. This ensures the original post creator does not get notifications and we can resolve your issue by discussing with you directly.

    Hey D,

Thank you for sharing the screenshot. I also have the “Adblock Plus” plugin. Between your screenshots and my settings, the only difference is that you have 4 lists in your filters whereas mine has only 1. When I installed it to test, only 1 is installed. Please check this https://www.dropbox.com/s/1enmpuds9hgrmba/Screenshot%202016-05-15%2001.46.58.png?dl=0

I would suggest removing the other lists and trying again.

    Hi,

I turned off my Adblock Plus filters one by one, and I’ve identified the particular filter that makes the Mailchimp for WordPress sign-up form disappear. The filter is called, “Fanboy’s Annoyance List.” None of my other three Adblock Plus filters cause this problem. Only the “Fanboy’s Annoyance List” triggers the disappearance of the Mailchimp for WordPress sign-up form. I didn’t specifically opt to use the Fanboy’s Annoyance List filter; nor was I even aware that I was using it. The Fanboy’s Annoyance List filter came pre-loaded as one of the default settings when I added the Adblock Plus extension to my Chrome browser.

Just to clarify, I’m not concerned that I can’t see the Mailchimp for WordPress sign-up form. I’m concerned that my website visitors won’t be able to see the Mailchimp for WordPress sign-up form if they’re using Adblock Plus with Fanboy’s Annoyance List as one of the selected filters.

The Mailchimp for WordPress sign-up form is the only form on my website that disappears when I turn on the Fanboy’s Annoyance List filter. My website also displays a newsletter sign-up form created by Ninja Forms and also an e-commerce form created by Easy Digital Downloads–neither of which are affected by the Fanboy’s Annoyance List filter. Only the Mailchimp for WordPress sign-up form is affected.

Is there anything you can do on your end to fortify the Mailchimp for WordPress sign-up form so that it doesn’t disappear when exposed to the Fanboy’s Annoyance List filter on Adblock Plus?

    Thanks!

P.S. On further reflection, I can’t recall if the Fanboy’s Annoyance List filter came as one of the default settings on Adblock Plus, or if I myself selected that particular filter. Either way, I remain concerned that my website visitors who are using that particular Adblock Plus filter won’t be able to see the sign-up form.

    Hi D,

Thank you for digging, I’ll take a look to see if there’s anything we can do circumvent the Fanboy’s Annoyance List filter.

I don’t think that’s a default filter by the way, I did a quick test among friends to see if they were affected but none of us have that filter activated, all using AdBlock Plus with the default settings.

Nonetheless, would be great if we can get off that filter list. 🙂

    Hi D,

Some more info: here’s the Fanboy Annoyance List. I can now say for sure that this is not a default AdBlock filter and users will have to actually subscribe to that list before the settings take effect.

    https://secure.fanboy.co.nz/fanboy-annoyance.txt

The filter list is very aggressive and it’s targeting a lot of plugins and elements. Circumventing it will be hard, and temporary at best.

I’m pretty positive that the list will never be a default AdBlock list, given its aggressiveness.

    Hi,

    Thanks for info!

Just as an experiment, I deleted the Mailchimp for WordPress plugin and tried using the Easy Forms for Mailchimp plugin instead. It worked fine, despite the fact that I was using Adblock Plus with all my filters–including the Fanboy Annoyance List filter–turned on. And as always, my e-commerce and email sign-up forms generated by Easy Digital Downloads and Ninja Forms, respectively, also work. Of the plugins I’m using, only the sign-up form generated by the Mailchimp for WordPress plugin seems susceptible to the Fanboy Annoyance Filter. Why, I don’t know.

I prefer your plugin, but I’m afraid that I may have to switch to another brand if you can’t do something to circumvent the Fanboy Annoyance List filter. If I’m using the Fanboy Annoyance Filter (and I wasn’t even aware that I was using it until a few days ago), I have to assume that many of my website visitors might be using it, too.

    Hi D,

Yes,less popular plugins are not on Fanboy’s filter yet, until they become popular enough after which Fanboy will add their element selector to the filter list… We can circumvent FanBoy’s list by changing our element ID’s and classes (with a lot of broken CSS as a result) but it’ll be a matter of time before the list is updated, and we’re back where we started.

However, the more important thing here is that I think it is pretty safe to say that none or at least a very, very, very small percentage of your visitors will be using that list, unless you’re site is targeting very ad / tracking / security aware people. It is a custom filter, not advertised by AdBlock Plus itself.

There are so many common elements on that list, like social sharing icons, rss feed buttons, comment form selectors that people using that list will be 1) rare 2) used to a very minimal web.

Long story short: there’s not much we can do in the long term as it’s a super aggressive list. That + the fact that it’s custom also means that very few people will be using it, though.

I hope that helps a bit!

    Hi D,

Some additional info, we’ve been on the FanBoy list since 2014 and this is the first we hear about someone not seeing our forms because of it. That should help you get some ease of mind. 🙂
