Something strange happened today to my Timeline announcements. Only some of them are getting cut off and ending with [..]. The images are not displaying if I add an image to the content rather than set it as a banner image. Also I see strange characters when Inspecting the items such as ==$0

basically, even though I set the excerpt size to 900 characters or more, I am still seeing the excerpt symbol and my images are not there on all of the timeline announcements.

by the way, I do believe this started with the plugin update that you released just today – thanks

Ignore the comment about the strange characters (that was a current line marker in Chrome element inspection 🙂

However, this is clearly an issue with excerpts being forced for some reason. Even if I set the number of characters very high, the images are not displaying and the text is cut off early. Also, my older announcements seem to work maybe because I used the banner image selection element. However, I prefer to use the “Add Media” button to select a certain size image and avoid the compression from the banner image function.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

    Hi Ari,

That is correct. We’ve re-written the plugin – and now handle things differently. The plugin now follows WordPress core standards, and we’ve removed any non-core function that were causing some glitchy issues.

Before we were using a very hacky work around to generate an excerpt with HTML in it – which was causing a ton of issues for many of our users. The timeline markup was not generating properly, and causing announcement items to be nested in one another – as well as some announcement images not displaying properly.

This was not the best way to handle things, and thus has since been re-written to use the standard function the_excerpt().

However, we have also included a new templating system to allow for users to customize the announcement containers on the timeline as well as the single announcement pages.

You can just as easily remove the_excerpt() and replace it with a custom function to generate the necessary markup that you need.

Our new documentation is on the following page:
    http://www.wp-timelineexpress.com/documentation/customize-announcement-container/

If you are a pro user, just head into the settings page and re-enable legacy support to get your old styles back (although the excerpt isn’t going to include HTML markup). (http://www.wp-timelineexpress.com/documentation/updated-timeline-express-pro-v1-2-timeline-different/)

Adding images to the body of the announcement is not the correct way to display different image sizes in the Timeline Thumbnail. If you need to alter the timeline thumbnail, you should be doing so via the built in filter. Here is the documentation o how to achieve that:
    http://www.wp-timelineexpress.com/documentation/how-do-i-use-a-larger-announcement-thumbnail-size/

    Thanks,
    Evan

Thank you for the excellent follow-up Evan. I should be able to handle it with this information.

No problem at all. I’m going to write up two separate articles in a little bit that will explain both how to alter the text of or hide the default ‘…read more’ link – and how to hook in and generate your own custom read more link – whether that be a new button, a new link with additional classes etc. Which should make it easy to set things back up how they were in the previous release.

I will certainly post back here when I get the article written up – as I’m sure others are going to have similar questions.

    Thanks!

I am closing out this issue due to inactivity.

If you are still having issues – feel free to open a new thread.

    Thank you,
