How to avoid changes being overwritten by theme updates?

    Can someone please help me figure out how to make changes to a theme without them being overwritten by theme updates? I made a new template in the templates folder and it appears to be gone.

    You should make any changes in a child theme from now on.

    doubledesign, I was successful in creating a child theme. Running into a different issue now. Do you have any ideas on what might be going wrong?

    Hi, I created a new template … as well as a new page … I assigned the template to the page via the dropdown menu … when I preview it is fine.

    The trouble happens when I go to Settings > Reading and try to assign that new static page to homepage. Once I do that I see just a blog page with a title. I no longer see the new page with new template I just created.

    I would appreciate any help.
