can't log into self-hosted site with external apps (ifttt, android)

i have two wp installs on sub-domains:

skel.insubstudios.com – for testing out features, plugins, themes, n’shit.
ed.insubstudios.com – multisite, education log.

both ifttt and the android wordpress app say they’re not wordpress sites. found this http://xmlrpc.eritreo.it/ in another forum, it also stalls out or gives an error.

i’ve tried
with & w/out “http://”
with & w/out “www.”
as a subdomain and to the sub-dir, e.g. insubstudios.com/ed
…sub-dirs with & w/out “http://”, “www.”, & “http://www.”

i’ve checked my site url in general settings and in the db. they are both correct.

i suspect it may be my hosting service (it locks me out if i make too many changes in cpanel). but i’m not sure.
