Something similar is happening to me.
I’m on 4.4.2 using the Divi theme from Elegant Themes.
When I click “Add Media” it pops up the Insert Media dialog box. However, once I select an image and click “Insert into Post”, it…. just does nothing. It closes the box without inserting the picture.
Any thoughts?

Actually, I did find a work around.
This fix is done inside the Divi Builder.
Let’s say you are using a “Text Module” in the Divi Builder.
Let’s say you open up that Text Module and start typing in the editor inside the module. You go to insert a picture. You can’t do it.
The workaround is simply this…
Switch from the Visual Editor to the Text Editor. Click the IMG tag. It will prompt you to enter a location for the image file.
You can enter the http from either an external source or the hard link from your Media library.
When you switch back to the visual editor, your image will be there. You will also be able to adjust it’s orientation (left, center, right).

can’t set feature image or insert media,
i can work around inserting media in pages and posts, but I don’t know the code for feature images.
Clients are getting frustrated…
I’ve searched around a lot for a solution but so far no luck.
I hope WP people can answer this soon!

for me the issue was the uBlock Origin add-on was blocking several items on my site. I disabled that chrome add-on and the site functions as expected.
