    Hi all,

All of a sudden, I have recently tried to add an image to one site and got this error.

Unable to create directory uploads/2016/02. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

The folders have been created automatically by wordpress, I’ve changed the file permissions, same problem. I’ve followed every other article and in my media settings the folder is set to: /home/forgoneo/public_html/starpoint9/wp-content/uploads

I’ve never had this problem and it has been working fine ever since… until now. Once I changed the path above to /home/forgoneo/…. to home/forgoneo I lost EVERY image that has been displayed on the website. Saying that the file has not been found. I add that “/” folder at the front and it everything works again but can’t upload.

I’ve got through the sites and reinstalled 4.4.2 again.

If the “/” needs to be removed from the beginning of the URL path. Is there a way to update ALL the existing media to update, as there is a significant number of images that have been impacted.

  • Hey stevennorth,

Normally, you’d get this message because of folder permissions.

In general WP permissions should be 755 for folders and 644 for files. So, I’d double-check to make sure your uploads directory is writeable by the server, including all sub-folders.

    Does that help?

I’ve gone through and changed file permissions to 777 and it still continued with the upload issues.

I’ve been looking at other posts on the forums and following them through, such as regenerating thumbnails and all but this doesn’t seem to work at all.

The moment I put wp-content/uploads in the media settings all the images from posts fail to display. Add /wp-content/uploads and the media on the pages display but the uploads decide to stop working.

Watched a youtu.be video about changing a setting in options through MyPHP and that setting is fine.

For all this time, it’s been operating without issues until now. Not sure what happened. Every post discusses that it should be wp-content/uploads but I lose access to all the other media files. Which has me stumped….

    Hey stevennorth,

Have you tried removing the string from the input field in the media settings, leaving it to default (rather than setting explicitly)?

Have you verified that your hosting account isn’t full?

That has just fixed everything. Thank you sincerely! I’m not sure why it was set explicitly either… Now it works 🙂

I’ve changed this setting across all of them and it’s working beautifully!

    Blammo! That’s awesome.

    Happy to help!

Hey guys I’m having the same problem that you guys are talking about. I have tried everything with the changing file permissions and its not fixing anything. I looked in to (Go to Dashboard > Settings > Media > check the uploads directory is correct.) I do not have the (Store uploads in this folder text area or the full URL path to files test area, I only have the check box Organize my uploads into moth and year based folders) In my WP-content folder I only have plugins. themes, and upgrade. I DO NOT have the uploads folder.

I have looked around to find how to fix this problem and have not found anything. I uploaded WP on Friday night form WP.org.

If it were the same problem then the same solution would have worked for you. This means you are not having the same problem and so you should open a new thread: https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting#postform

Sorry, need to add an update. This now works in the “Media > Add New” for the media which is what I tested out last night but now getting this message when adding media to the post “An error occurred in the upload. Please try again later.”

This is what I’ve done tonight and we’re getting somewhere…

The problems was that the media library was not loading.

    > Rolled back to previous backup, prior to making the changes (Had problems)
    > Reverted back to WP 4.4.1 (Had Problems)
    > Reverted back to WP 4.4.0 (Had Problems)

Somewhere throughout there, deactivating plugins etc… (had problems)

Decided to change the theme… as I only utilised one theme and deleted the rest. Installed twentysixteen and media library worked and upload media worked.

Going to do a restore back to the prior of all modifications and see if the file uploads have issues.

    Good luck Steven!

    Cheers Eric.

After all that. The theme caused a lot of grief. As such, I overhauled the entire site design and created something with another theme that is spankingly fresh and sexy.

And it allows the media to be imported and all sorts of stuff. I’ve told the developers of the theme. Perhaps with one of the updates to WP that the theme became problematic. Now I have something that I truly adore!

There were two glitches. The default save path and this was confirmed with another site using a different theme and then followed up by the theme itself.

Mind you, there was an entire day when the server had the ip address blocked because of the ftp connections… So all in all… Got it finally resolved.

Wow, sounds like an ordeal, but I’m glad you made it through and are happy with your new theme.

    Hi

I am having the same problem and getting the same message. My permissions have been changed to 774 by my hosting client as I have support they have just sent me an email to tell me but it is still not working.

They say that the Store uploads in this folder

    /home/plat-linnas01/k/kilburnbridlington.co.uk/user/htdocs/wp-content/uploads

is the same as on the server.

I am at a loss as what to do now.

I have also tried to upload another theme and it fails everytime.

Thanks for you help in advance.
