Hi, I installed Sketch, after searching for a lightweight theme. I love how it looks. But I’ve had all kinds of errors – so much so I had to delete my home (“about”) page b/c an image simply would not load on it (it did previously, no problem, on a much “heavier” theme – Avada. Consulted with my hosting service… no problems, I deleted some plugins.. Still it won’t even load a new page.

    Using this tool: http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/
we discovered one problem appears to be from the font:
    wp-content/themes/sketch/genericons/genericons.css?ver=3.0.3

    1. Can I just delete that?
    2. Also, are there font “options”? I’m loathe to start messing with the CSS. THank you,
    ES

Let me look into this and get back to you. The Genericons font is used for icons in the theme, but it certainly shouldn’t be causing any extra loading time.

Could you provide a link to your site so I can take a look directly?

    2. Also, are there font “options”? I’m loathe to start messing with the CSS.

No, but you can use a Google Fonts plugin to add new fonts. If you need help with the accompanying CSS, just let us know which elements you’d like to change once you’ve enqueued your desired font(s) and we’ll be glad to help.

Paolo Bardon – would you mind please starting a new thread and providing a link to your site so I can have a look separately? Thanks.

Could you let me know if these two demo sites also load slowly for you?

I’ll be glad to investigate further once I have the link to your site. Thanks!

    Hi Kathryn,
I spent the day (more like 24 hours) on this – am heading off for a while now. That font doesn’t help, but it didn’t prove limiting. But after a lot of trial and error, I think the ultimate block had to do with the custom menu with links to social media. When I removed that (among other things). After I created that 2 days ago seemed to be when things got really bad.) Now the site: http://www.elaineschattner.com is working better. I need yet to finish the portfolio.

    1. I may ask you for help, if you don’t mind, with changing fonts (but that is not urgent). If there’s a simple way to make it smaller, please let me know.
    2. I am trying to customize the portfolios by subject, and to have each show a thumbnail, title, excerpt…But I can’t get it to show the date of publication. Is there a way of indicating – for all “project” type posts, i.e. projects – to show date, and certain other attributes?

    Thank you,
    ES

    1. To reduce the font size of the text within the body of your posts, try this custom CSS:

    .entry-content {
       font-size: 100%
    }

Don’t edit the theme files directly, otherwise your changes will be overwritten every time the theme is updated to the latest version.

Since you’re already using Jetpack, an easy way to add custom CSS is to activate the Custom CSS module. You’ll then add your custom CSS in the new stylesheet editor that’ll appear in your dashboard, under Appearance > Edit CSS.

    2. Are you using the portfolio shortcode?

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/portfolio-shortcode/

There isn’t an option to display the date with the shortcode, but you’ll see what attributes are available on that information page. You can include a date within the single project page itself.

    Hi Kathryn,
I have the site, http://www.elaineschattner.com in decent shape now. (And I like how it looks.) The problem is there are two portfolio folders, one of which I emptied deliberately, and the other into which I inserted about half of the stuff I wish to include (so far).

It’s a little confusing – I think one of the portfolio folders is from “jetpack” and the other is with the theme, but it’s not entirely obvious which goes with which.

    current issues:
    1. how to show portfolio items with more annotations (and is it possible to add text below the header, above the items, in each portfolio page?
    2. is there a way to put a link icon or something like that – to customize the portfolio items, and to show certain data, such as date?
    3. menu – upper right – can’t get it to consistently show words instead of small lines; it keeps switching.

I will deal with the font later, but for now, these are the main issues. Thank you, ES

Hi Elaine, let me answer your questions separately:

    3. menu – upper right – can’t get it to consistently show words instead of small lines; it keeps switching.

The full menu is displayed on windows wider than 1280px. On screens smaller than that, the compact “hamburger” icon is displayed instead.

You can check your browser window width here:

    2. is there a way to put a link icon or something like that – to customize the portfolio items, and to show certain data, such as date?

Please provide a link to the portfolio page you’re referring to and I’ll have a look.

Are you using the portfolio shortcode on that page? As I mentioned earlier, there isn’t an option to display the date with the shortcode, but you’ll see what attributes are available on that information page. You can include a date within the single project page itself.

It’s probably possible to use some custom CSS to add an icon next to the portfolio titles. Once I see your page I can have another look.

Again, please provide a link to your portfolio page and note the possible attributes you can use with the shortcode I mentioned above. A date is not one of the available options, but you can display other data, as referenced here:

    1. My browser width is 1280 – I just checked using the link you supplied. What’s weird is that the other day it showed the words/page titles, now (and yesterday) it doesn’t; I checked that it’s fully open – closed and opened the window..

    2. Here is a link to one of the portfolio pages:
    https://www.elaineschattner.com/journalism/project-type/bc-screening/
again – there’s the issue of the two portfolio folders appearing on my dashboard; one, I think, is for “WP-Jetpack” and the other is for the theme? I’m concerned about that – because it was a lot of work to get in so many items, and I’m not done.

    3. I need to show “as seen in “publication X”, the dates…I tried using the shortcode the other day, but it seemed to work only with some Project types (I have a 3-tiered menu).

Is there a way you or someone at Automattic might help? (There’s only so much I can put on a forum.) I’ve received a few emails, from people having seen this convo – but IME unless people really know a theme it’s not helpful and can cause damage.
    Thank you

Can you let me know your browser, version, and OS so I can try to replicate the issue? You can find that here if you’re not sure:

The portfolio functionality in Sketch is only available via Jetpack; it is not built into the theme itself. Is it possible you previously activated a different portfolio plugin? I suggest having a look in your plugins dashboard to see if anything rings a bell.

If you think this might be a Jetpack issue – which you could confirm by temporarily disabling the Custom Content Types module; if both Portfolio menu items disappear, you know they’re both coming from Jetpack – please contact their support directly for troubleshooting:

    3. I need to show “as seen in “publication X”, the dates…I tried using the shortcode the other day, but it seemed to work only with some Project types (I have a 3-tiered menu).

Can you provide a link to one project type where it worked as you liked, and another link to one where it didn’t so I can compare?

Is there a way you or someone at Automattic might help? (There’s only so much I can put on a forum.)

I am with the Automattic theme team and have been helping users with Sketch in the forums for over a year. We only do public forum support for our free, open-source themes, and I am happy to continue troubleshooting with you here. If you’re not getting the help you need and prefer a more hands-on approach, you might want to hire someone to help you out. A good place to find WordPress experts is in your local WordPress meetup group if you have one. Alternatively you can post your requirements here: http://jobs.wordpress.net/

    Hi Kathryn,
Based on your suggestion, I was able to figure out that the portfolio items are from the jetpack, and not theme-specific. That is what I wanted: a theme-independent portfolio setup. If I write again, it would be with questions about the theme fonts and stuff like that.

    Thank you for your help!
