Can someone explain the permalinks directory structure please?

    I am a little baffled by how permalinks work (among a lot of other things :)).
    I have set it up to use a directory structure like this: /posts/year/month/date/postname – and it seems to be working fine.
    However, I am entirely unable to locate these directories when I connect to my host with an ftp client. Are they “virtual” in a way I just cannot comprehend, so they do not actually exists as “real” directories/folders, or do I just need glasses?

    Since I hopefully got your attention I might as well throw in another question that has been bugging me for the last half hour.

    I have tried to create a few pages (using the “pages” function), and while they seem to be generated without problems and they show up under management, hitting the view button or typing in the adress directly just results in a 404 (set to redirect to main page in my htaccess file).
    Anyone who can explain this little phenomenon?

    They are virtual – they do not exist.
    Apache (the server) makes them ‘on the fly’ so that everything looks wonderful when it’s actually all just stored in the db.
    I’ve been using WP for over 14 months, and with rewrite rules, I just blindly accept them 🙂

    I do – but it is on an adult related site (though nothing is up yet) so I would rather not :).

    Anyway, things are looking a bit strange – when I choose “Manage Pages” and click edit, I am taken to the “Write Post” section for that page even though it shows all the options from “Write Page”.
    The one page I have actually been able to succesfully create seems to be treated like a post with timestamp, category etc. showing on the page.

    Something looks very strange indeed.

    I did the first install through Fantastico (v1.2.2) and manual upgrade to 1.5 afterwards, so I have just removed everything and trying a clean manual install.

    If things are still messed up I will cry for help :). Thanks.

    Yes, I read through most of what I could find on codex last night – but right now it looks more like a bug to me than a problem with the structure as such (at least in the setup as it is covered in that tutorial), since permalinks to posts were working okay.
    Let’s see what happens after a reinstall.

    Reinstall complete and pages seem to be working fine now. The theme I was using was the reason for the timestamp (on default template), but there must have been something fishy going on with permalinks afterall since those pages resulted in a 404.

    Well, back to work. Would be nice with a personal design touch :).
