Welcome Page vs About Page vs Home Page vs Landing Page vs First Post???

    As You can probably tell by the title of this thread, I’m a total WP noob and a bit confused.

    I’ve got everything installed and running so I go to write my first post and click on “Posts”. Then I notice a default “Welcome” page… so I start Googling what I should put in a first post and what I should put in a “Welcome” page and they pretty much sound like the same thing… Then I come across the “About” page and search on that as well, and it sounds pretty much like a Welcome page… Then there’s the “Home” page, which sounds a lot like a Welcome page. But if that’s not enough, someone mentions a “Splash” page, which I can only assume is the same as a Home page, which sounds like the Welcome page…

    So… Which is which and what’s the difference?

    Some of these terms are interchangeable. For instance: Welcome Page, Home Page and Landing Page. Example: https://wordpress.org

    Landing Pages don’t always have to be the Home Page or Welcome Page. They are just a page you want a visitor to land on. Sometimes people use these to create sort of a secondary homepage for a specific targeted audience. Sometimes they are fancy and more marketing oriented like in these examples: http://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/landing-page-examples-list and sometimes it’s just to list content for another related audience as in this example: https://make.wordpress.org/

    About Page is usually a separate page that tell the visitor what the site is about and/or the individual behind the site and/or the company about the site. Example: https://wordpress.org/about/

    First Post is just a term that WordPress uses to say “here is your first blog post, yay!”.

    Thanks Tia, yes that does help. In fact, the idea of a landing page really helps for my needs… So I assume the way people find your landing page is based on the page’s tags and content?
