Hi there,
Is the installation ultimately successfull even though it does not show that it has successfullry finished?
In any case you should check your error logs because, if an error occurs, it should be logged there.
One common culprit for such cases is the request taking too long and failing to return to the browser. What means actually “too long” depends on the server configuration, and it is the PHP max timeout variable. Browsers will usually wait long enough. However this should not have anything to do with the upgrade to Windows 10, perhaps this was a coincidence.
Also, this might be a filesystem error. Perhaps the update is not able to be unpacked in the filesystem, and this could relate to the Windows upgrade and the changes that it might have inflicted on your filesystem. But this should probably show up in the error logs!
So far they seemed to all install and function. But when I tried the error monitor plugin the same thing happened but this time it didn’t appear in my dashboard screen options to enable (its network activated but its nowhere to be seen). What error logs do you mean? I’ve looked on my host server but can only find huge transaction logs that don’t seem to contain error info.Just HEAD, POST and GET transactions.
When you say it is “network activated” do you mean that you are using a multisite installation?
Usually the error logs are named something like “error_log” and you should probably find them inside your WordPress installation root directory. But there are other places depending on the environment. What’s more PHP must be configured to save error logs. I am afraid you will have to consult with your web hosting administrator on that. (Some hosts even have a special area in their control panels for error logs.)
If you contact them, then also check out the other thing I mentioned earlier about the PHP max execution time and whether it is too low by any chance.
Yes its a multi site network. I found error_log and its full of error 28 lines but nothing at the times I am installing the plug ins.
So to sum it all up 1) the plugin remains in the “unpacking” state 2) however it does get installed in the end and 3) nothing appears in the error logs, right?
I am sorry, I cannot think of anything further at the moment. One last thing you could do, not as a solution, but as a fallback, is to wait for the next update in the WordPress core and mention your problem to your system administrator as well.
I guess thats about it. I had wondered if it was a general problem.
@patbell101: if you have a plugin network activated in multisite, you will not see it in the subsite dashboard– only in the network admin dashboard.
I am talking about the actual unpacking screen – for me the ‘unpacking’ never goes away and the “return to plug in page’ link is obscured by the semi transparent side menu of the dashboard. It is unclear that it has finished.
Sometimes plugin/theme installs appear to “hang” and be unfinished, when it actually DOES finish the install & function properly. Basically, just the browser times out, while things continue to progress. Have you checked in another window to see if it actually installed properly? If so, then the appearing to hang may be just something to live with…?
It does install afaics its just disconcerting.
