• We have just noticed that if you go onto various sections of our website, when you click the Page Numbers at the bottom of the holding pages (eg, News, Blog, Case Studies, etc), you just get the same list of articles over and over again, ie, the 5 articles displayed on pages 2, 3, 4, etc is the same list as those listed on Page 1.

Has anyone experienced this? Is this a known issue? I’ve tried searching the web for people with a similar problem, but perhaps my terminology isn’t correct because I’m not seeing anything.

Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Hey @brianlf, could you share a link to the site?

Have you tried deactivating your plugins and reactivating one by one (while testing again each time) to rule out any plugin-related issues? Also switching to a default theme and checking again can rule out theme-related issues.

This could also potentially be related to https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/35344 if you care to read through those comments and see if any of the suggestions there help.

    Hi Craig

Thanks for posting. No, we didn’t try the Plug-in deactivation scenario yet. However, am I to infer from the post you cited that this is a known issue affecting others? If so, is it worth trying to go through all our Plug-ins, or should we wait to see whether an update fixes this? If it’s not a known issue and deactivating and reactivating the Plug-ins doesn’t work, what’s the next step?

Thanks for your help, and again, thanks for your reply.

BTW, sorry, I forgot to add a URL. http://www.bitcni.org.uk/latest-news/ is an example of one of the pages that won’t paginate.

    Cheers. 🙂

Well the first step would be to confirm where the issue is actually coming from. Which can be narrowed down significantly by deactivating plugins and switching to a default theme.

    • Do you have a link to the site? This helps the troubleshooting process by allowing volunteers to use browser dev tools to help diagnose an issue.
    • What theme are you using?
    • Under Settings > Reading, is it set to “Your latest posts” or “A static front page”?
    • Under Settings > Permalinks, which option are you using?

    Hey @brianlf,

This (or at least an extremely similar) issue is actively being discussed on Slack as it seems you are not the only one having category pagination issues.

@ipstenu was kind enough to do the real work tracking it down and you can find her bug report here https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/35482. I would recommend taking a look through the report to confirm that you are actually having the same issue (I am not sure of your exact setup so I can’t say for sure but the symptoms are very similar).

Thanks Craig & Mika, for your posts. Does this mean that it’s a bug that WordPress itself needs to fix, or do we need to get the Developer of our site to fix something?

    Thanks again.
