Support » Fixing WordPress » Hacker using weird username

  • My security plugin (Limit Login Attempts) shows me that someone using a very strange username has tried repeatedly to get into my site.

    The format is:

    [domainname]status[18-digits]

I have seen 2 different sets of 18-digits, both starting with the same two numbers.

Is someone trying to exploit a weakness in a plugin? I can’t find anything on the internet about this.

Just want to flag this up in case it is of use to someone more technical than I am (which is not very).

If you notice anything suspicious, I would follow the guide on what to do if you’ve been hacked.

If you are just seeing usernames trying to log in, that is common, especially as your site gets more popular. WordPress is now powering over 25% of websites, which means hackers/people with ill intent know chances are good someone has a WordPress site. Don’t worry though, I would just follow the steps on hardening WordPress: http://codex.wordpress.org/Hardening_WordPress

    I hope this helps.
