media.php error?

Warning: Illegal string offset ‘file’ in /home/…/wp-includes/media.php on line 1088

I’m getting this warning multiple times on several of my pages on my site: http://scidangelsforlife.com. I first tried to disable all plug-ins. That didn’t help. I then changed the theme to the new default twenty sixteen. That didn’t help. I then tried a soft reinstall of WordPress from the dashboard: version 4.4.1. That didn’t help either. I attempted to ftp to the file media.php and replace it with the old version from the backup and the entire site would no longer load, so I had to replace it with the one that is causing this error.

I’ve searched here and not seen anything more than the suggestions for doing what I’ve already done. Same when I google the error, except that I see that many other wordpress sites are experiencing the same error.

Does anyone know what to do to repair the file?
