Most thumbnails are broken on 4.4. I have confirmed this on two separate installs. In both cases disabling all plugins doesn’t help. Regenerating thumbnails doesn’t work. Repairing the database using WP_ALLOW_REPAIR doesn’t fix it. Are other people experiencing this? I have cleared all caches, restarted NGINX, turned off Varnish, restarted Apache, MySQL, turned off Memchached, nothing fixes this. How many other people are experiencing this? I also tried switching themes but it didn’t fix it either.

    Hi,

Could you link is to your site where you are observing these issues?

To be clear the thumbnails are broken in the admin area but work on the live site. But browsing media using the list view shows broken thumbnails, as do any plugin that relies on showing thumbnails when creating content.

I’ve not come across any other reports of this in WordPress 4.4, so it could be that it’s site/server specific. Anything in your error logs that could help?

Where can I find the error logs? In WC-logs I only have PayPal logging.

The server’s error logs. WordPress doesn’t have error logs by default – although you can enable debugging.

I just checked the Apache logs, no fail, error or warning. Is there a specific code for error messages I could look for?

Nothing that comes to mind, no. Have you tried switching to the default 2015 theme?

Yeah I tried that too but it didn’t make a difference. I also tried regenerating all thumbnails but it only fixed some of them while on the second server it fixed none. One possibility is that W3 Total Cache (previously used but off when trouble shooting) could have caused some change as I used CloudFront CDN. The strange thing is that even with W3/CDN off the thumbnails are still broken in admin.

Last thing to clarify: If I change from list view to the new continuous box view when looking at media in WP I can see all thumbnails. But things that rely on the old list view for media (such as galleries) will display broken image links when viewed in admin / post edit section.

I wonder… are you showing the backend as https, and front end as plain http ?

    Thread Starter hoy

    (@whereskarlo)

Yes I do! I use WooCommerce and checkout is also using https. However, https on the front end shows all media. In the admin using https some media also displays, it is roughly 50-80% of media that doesn’t show any thumbnails.

    (@clorith)

That sounds to be the reason, if you don’t have https enabled on the front end everywhere, the default URL structure will use http:// urls, since you can’t load http content when using https, these will not be displayed (I suspect it’s related to when the https settings were changed, but I could be mistaken on that point).

Could you try disabling the https on the back end, and seeing if the images return then?

It seems you are right, but why did this problem only just appear with the 4.4 update? Shouldn’t all media thumbnails be invisible when admin is using https, and why are they all visible when looking in the media library with grid view instead of list view?

    Hi,

It sounds like you are brushing into https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/34109, perhaps you could help get that solved by telling a bit about how it’s behaving on your end to help get traction to fixing it?

Enhancements are constantly going into the wp-admin area to make https detection better, but some times on some setups they have unexpected results, so it’s really helpful to get any information we can into such tickets πŸ™‚

Thanks for the recommendation, I have added my findings to that thread. Lets hope it gets fixed with the next release.
