Emails Hijacked and hosting account suspended

    I installed WP Mail SMTP and edited settings as per various instructions. The next day the hosting account was suspended because someone was sending pornographic emails from the domain email, but before the site was suspended someone got in and added some suspicious code. Big headaches. So my advice is be careful as this is the only plugin I installed just before the problems started.

    Is it possible that the setting I used in the plugin opened up the smtp to hackers?

    Probably what happened was this:

    • You had malware on your site sending spam
    • The spam went nowhere because your site had no way to actually deliver it
    • You installed WP Mail SMTP and your email started working
    • Spam came pouring out of you site
