Image Metdata required for SEO
-
Hi
I am reuploading the images for my site and want to try and ensure they are SEO compliant and accessible etc.
I have read a few articles and just wanted to confirm I have it clear.
When I upload I get the fields which I hope does…:
Title: This is for my benefit only for sorting, finding an image and doesn’t affect SEO or the customer view
Caption: Appears below the image as a caption
Alt: Used for SEO and accessibility if image doesn’t load this text will show.
Description: No ideaI also read I should (and then I read I shouldn’t) go in and add a Title Attribute to every image (via the edit image page).
Does this help at all as it seems a lot of work for each image if not needed.
I have looked for articles but a lot contradict each other as what helps and what doesn’t.
From what I can gather the `Alt’ is the most important for SEO purposes.
Or not, any enlightenment?

Hi,
For images, there are a few important aspects, I’d say the file name you chose for the file before uploading plays an important role (because that’ll be indexed), as well as using a good Alt text when you put an image on a page.
The Caption field is used to give extra information about an image, like licensing information, the rights holder of it etc if it’s someone else as an example (you often see news sites always have a caption with this information).
The title field is if you enable individual file pages (If you run any SEO plugin, they usually have an option to redirect you away from these, since they provide no proper value in the grand scheme of things).
The title field isn’t needed at all, it’s used for fancy mouse over texts and does not help with accessibility, this is all about the Alt texts.
Hope this helps get you going in the right direction 🙂
Hi Marius:
Thanks for the info, I was a bit off as I didn’t think the filename was all that important, but as you say it’s indexed so it would be.
Thanks for the help
Ernie
