Support » Fixing WordPress » Migrated WP Blog – garbage characters appear

  • I just migrated a blog to a new server – testing it before switching over, so I have “live” access to both old and new installations. All works fine, except now I’ve got these funky garbage characters in my posts: They’re question marks inside diamonds, and they stand in for punctuation marks – quotes, apostrophes, etc.

The SAME THING happened the last time I changed hosts for this particular blog a few years ago. I remember solving it in one fell swoop, but can’t recall how. I normally log such lessons learned, but I’ve got no record of this. Foolish.

What’s odd is, I just migrated two other blogs to the same new server, without the problem. In any case, I’m guessing this might relate to copying text into WP from Word or elsewhere.

I’ve researched through the WP forum, can’t find a clear fix.

The MySQL databases in both the original and new blog installations are set to collate with utf8_general_ci. I even compared collation between old and new for various tables – charsets are set the same. wp-config.php has same charset settings in both old and new blog installations.

Thanks for any insights or suggestions!
