    Hi there,

I’m an artist, and when I post new jpegs to my site, they become horribly compressed. Not just a little — it’s as if you selected 25% or lower in Photoshop (the images I upload are unnoticeably compressed).

At first, I thought this was jsut happening with with new uploads, but when I go back though very old posts I notice ALL my jpeg uploads are this way. (png files are untouched).

This is happening even on images I don’t use the file uploader for (ie: my site logo in the column).

Why is this happening? Any ideas??
    Thank you!

Is this happening for the original images that can be found in the uploads folder at their original sizes?

I checked, and the original images on the FTP are high quality; at least when I download them from the server.

But when I type the image URL in a browser, they look terribly compressed. Example:
    http://dallion.com/wp-content/uploads/fire_your_boss_web.jpg

    Also over-compressed:

They look this way in Chrome and Firefox. Is it just me?

In one sense you’re probably the only one who can notice it – because we haven’t got your original image and we aren’t familiar with it or your website.

Are you just going off looks or is there a difference like the size of the file?

    Good question.

So I right-clicked and saved the image on my WP, and the file size is 49kb. The original image that I uploaded was 156kb!

In an effort to discover what is causing this compression, I disabled ALL my plug-ins… it still happened. Must be something with WP itself.

And if you manually put the image in your uploads folder via FTP, does that image have the same problem?

When I went to that page, this is what I see: http://i.imgur.com/ydfSSSF.png

Image is 152,309 bytes in size and if I do Save Image As it makes a 148KB file. Using Firefox 42 in Windows 7 Pro.

    Thanks for the info, Mark.

I think I figured out the problem: I live remotely and only get internet access via my iphone hotspot. To use less data, I believe the phone is compressing images accessed through it.

This problem was driving me mad. Thanks guys for helping me figure it out. 🙂
