Finding a theme for our assembly of experts

Hi there,
we are small NGO here in Paris, France affiliated with the UN. Our site features a small directory (60 + members, for now) of experts, people who master one expertise (anything from art appraisal to legal expertise) as well as a short presentation of who we are and an application form to become an expert. We want to move to a new wordpress-based site that looks modern and that will be able to evolve alongside our organization in the next 3-5 years and beyond as we add on new experts and start publishing content (expertly articles, etc).

Which template would you recommend? Do you recommend specific plug-ins?
Each member would need to have their own email address with webmail access, login access, etc. (although I believe that that feature is available anyway on any wordpress site, depending on the host).
