Had 5 blocked IPs attempt entry to my website today. Anxious to be up to date with security releases.

    How do I resolve this?

“Update Failed: The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.”

    Hi Ben,

Sounds like it might be file permissions on our site as the error says. Can you manually install the newest Wordfence by deleting the wp-content/plugins/wordfence directory and unzipping the newest Wordfence.zip into your plugins directory?

    Regards,

    Mark.

Yikes. I’m a gweeb with WP. I managed to put together my website like a layperson with some help from my hosting provider however even understanding what you just advised is a challenge for me. 🙁

Should I delete the plug-in and then re-install it?

On the Wordfence options page, can you try turning on “Disable config caching”, save the options, and then attempt the update again?

I’ve seen a few servers where the config cache file seems to be stuck, and so far this has helped.

If it does not help, then yes, you can disable the plugin, delete it, and add it again. Let us know how it goes, or if you still have trouble!

Thank you. Prior to receiving your response above, I updated to Premium, attempted the update and got the same message. I have now followed your instructions above. Same message results:

An error occurred while updating Wordfence Security: The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions. tmp/configCache.php

Before I go and disable the plugin and add it again… will I negatively affect my premium membership? (Perhaps special steps to disabling and re-adding because of Premium?)

Ok — normally you could remove it and reinstall, but since you mentioned you’re not familiar with manually moving files around, I recommend asking the host to remove only the file causing the problem, just in case it can’t be removed. First double-check that the “Disable config caching” option is still off, and then ask the host to remove this file for the site you’re working on:
    wp-content/plugins/wordfence/tmp/configCache.php

If you have multiple sites on your hosting account, make sure they know which site you are working on.

After the file is removed, you should either be able to update or uninstall and reinstall.

If you do have trouble with the key afterward, you can get help at the site below, since you are now a premium user:
    https://support.wordfence.com/

(Since the keys are a premium function, the wordpress.org forum rules don’t allow us to support it here, but the original issue wasn’t a premium issue.)

I finally implemented your suggestion above. As soon as I deleted that file, it must have automatically updated because as I went back to my site to do the update it was already at the most current version! Cool. All up to date now.

    Thank you.
