  • Hi Divvy,

As far as I’m aware this will be WordPress changing the slug on you as part of it’s in-built protection.

I believe the reason is that .’s aren’t allowed in URLs past the .com TLD part of the URL.

    Hope this helps!

Hey jkohlbach, thank you for your reply.

But I think that is not a problem using a url like:
    http://www.mydomain.com/go/externaldomain.com

I have seen this in other websites too…

I know that both urls works well with your plugin… but I dont know if Im going to have problems in the future. Or is safe to work with the dot one? Can you confirm? I just dont want my urls stopped to work someday 🙂

    Waiting for your reply, thanks!

    Hi Tim,

I just gave this a test myself and it appears WordPress is actually still stripping the . from the URL slug for me.

Can you confirm how you’re managing to get the . into the URL?

Personally I would not risk it and would use a more valid URL syntax. The escaping filters for this are controlled by WordPress via the esc_url function which we use on all slugs and link redirects. I would advise sticking to the WordPress convention where possible.

    Cheers,
    Josh

    Hey Josh,

Thank you very much for your reply.

You were right, the problem was in wordpress and not in your plugin, I installed a plugin that fixed this for me and now I can use dots in my urls:

Thank you anyway my friend 🙂

    Kind regards,
    Tim
