Hello, I’m having trouble with your plugin and compatibility with varnish.

I was having issues with my server, and when I asked them, this was their answer:

“We have checked the configuration and on the server level your website is configured correctly with our recommended settings , however varnish is not properly working on your site because your site is generating some custom cookies which is mentioned below:

    Cookie:icwp-wpsf=3ac146c3ec5cc394f66257e272a46a94; _gat=1; _ga=GA1.2.1682192129.1442949865

This custom cookie is either generated from the plugins or the themes installed in your application which needs to be removed in order to further boost up your site’s performance , we would recommend you to check this with your developer as this is related to the application.”

Is there any ways you could help me deactivate that cookie, or any idea what could be causing this?

    Hi,

Sorry for the trouble with this… I’m not honestly sure how this particular cookie would be messing with your cache. It’s also not just our cookie, it’s your Google Analytics cookie too, so there’s no way to know which is causing the issue.

Our cookie is as simple as it gets – it’s just a string. I’ll review the code behind the cookie, but I believe it is only generated depending on certain plugin options you have specified – i.e. those that require the use of a cookie.

If your host could elaborate more on why exactly the cookie is messing with Varnish, perhaps we could tweak it. Maybe it’s too long? Maybe the name of the cookie with a hypen causes issue. Simple removing the cookie altogether isn’t necessarily viable. Surely Varnish can “handle” cookies?

The more information on what is causing the problem, the better… that way we can work with it.

    Cheers

Hello, I don’t know what the problem was, but it appears they managed to fix it on their end, they said they did some tweaks on the Varnish for it to work. No specifics though, so at the end I don’t even know if it was your plugin, I’m just glad it’s fixed and there was no way I was going to stop your plugin, it’s by far my favorite Firewall Plugin and I use it on all of my sites.

Anyways, thank you for your response and trying to help me.

Great, that’s good they did the necessary to fix it. Caching systems are notoriously tricky things to get right and I can’t imagine how a single cookie will break it. Great that the problem is solved!
