Got a report on one of my sites listing just about every file inside /wp-includes/ folder as being change/modified. When I logged in to check and open the file compare I get this error on your website:

WordFence API error: You did not request a valid WordPress core file from WordFence.

The site recently updated to 4.3.1 and then a scan ran slightly afterwords. I’m not sure there is really anything wrong with these files.

  • Hi,

Are you running the latest version of Wordfence? If not, try updating and scanning again.

Yes, I have automatic updates enabled too. It updated this morning before the scan. I was hoping the error message was the clue.

This most likely means that the scan started before the core update, and finished afterward. I haven’t seen this particular error from trying to use the comparison though.

Can you try marking at least one of the files as having been fixed, and try running the scan manually, and see if it comes up again?

Even if that does help, we’ll still look into the API error — let us know what you see in the next scan.
