    Hi megboggs,

This is down to your theme not supporting html5 for search forms. If it did have, a placeholder field would give the word “search” (or other phrase of your choice) in the box. This is in accordance with the wordpress defaults (lines 225 – 241).

Alternatively to adding html5 support, you can write your own search box template using the filter hook get_nav_search_box_form as demonstrated in the FAQ “How do I modify the output of the search box?”

I’m marking this as resolved as the issue of html5 support is a responsibility of your theme and not this plugin.

    Cheers,
    Joe
