• I noticed a number of unsubscriptions coming recently, the first ones I have ever had. They are all from Gmail.

Then I noticed one in particular. It is my test email address.

I absolutely did not unsubscribe so either Gmail or Newsletter is unsubscribing my gmail subscribers en masse.

    Any knowledge/info/suggestion on this matter?

Actually I don’t know: there is no reason for that. Wich unsubscription url are you using on newsletters? {unsubscription_url} or {unsubscription_confirm_url}?

IM not actually sure Stefano. Where might I find that information.

I re-confirmed the status of my test email account and just now it has unsubscribed again without me doing anything.

Anyway gmail could be doing this? Or is it likely to be the plug-in.

Uhm, if someone is calling your unsubscription url the system unsubscribe the account. Can you change the token in your test profile to something different?

    Thread Starter FitbaTips

    (@fitbatips)

    Yes.

Does it (the token) have to be a particular format or can I just put in any old number?

    Plugin Author Stefano Lissa

    (@satollo)

    whatever random sequence of characters.

    Thread Starter FitbaTips

    (@fitbatips)

I have changed the token now Stefano. I will give it 5 days to see if it unsubscribes again.

    Thread Starter FitbaTips

    (@fitbatips)

    Unsubscribed again within minutes.

While I am here. All emails to hotmail, yahoo, sky and some random others bounce back. I have been forwarding them through the gmail test account.

Would it be worth my while unistalling and reinstalling the plug in?

To be honest, I am on the verge of looking for an alternative. The current process is unsustainable.

Hi, you changed the token of your test subscriber, without make any other action on it and is has been unsubscribed?

Unsubscribed or bounced? Are you using a bounce plugin?

Emails that bounce back, have a reason for the bounce inside: which is the reason?

    Thread Starter FitbaTips

    (@fitbatips)

That is correct. No other actions were taken and it Unsubscribed again.

The emails have never bounced from gmail. Just unsubscribed.

    I am not using a bounce plug-in.

I have contacted dreamhost about the issue but have just been recycled through a service ticket for some time.

The problem of bounced emails is rather clear:

So your provider has a problem in its servers.

The unsubscription with a changed token cannot be started alone. Do you entered a page where there is the unsubscription link (for example the online profile page of the test subscriber)? An antivirus could follow the unsubscription link and navigate to the unsubscription procedure.

I’ll look at the code if there is enough protection against that.

    Thread Starter FitbaTips

    (@fitbatips)

Yes there is “cancel subscription” option on the online profile page.

So anti-virus software on a users hardware may be the cause?

Strange that all the unsubscriptions happened at a similiar time and all from gmail.

Worth my while signing up with another gmail account to see how that is affected?

    Plugin Author Stefano Lissa

    (@satollo)

If a software, for example an antivirus, simulate a human navigation trough links, it could activate the unsubscription. Actually the unsubscription procedure has an intermediate page with a javascript to try to block bots, but it could be not enough.

It can be reinforced and now I’m looking at it, since your situation seems explained by a bot navigating the links. Anyway I have many subscribers with gmail and they are still subscribed, so I don’t think it is a gmail problem.

    Thread Starter FitbaTips

    (@fitbatips)

    Thanks for your help Stefano

Sorry if I seem a little clueless. Let me know when you have looked at reinforcing your intermediate page and I will let you know if the accounts are still unsubscribing.

    Thread Starter FitbaTips

    (@fitbatips)

Just to say that the test email still unsubscribes almost immediately after it is re-confirmed.

Could it have something to do with the fact that I use that email address to forward the newlsetter to emails that have bounced back?
