Error 500 after upgrading to version 4.2.3

    Hello,

    I tried to upgrade to version 4.2.3 from the control panel. It all worked fine and then the following message appeared:

    Database Update Required

    WordPress has been updated! Before we send you on your way, we have to update your database to the newest version.

    The update process may take a little while, so please be patient.

    Update WordPress Database

    So I clicked on “Update WordPress Database” and an error 500 ocured. It’s just stuck there.

    I disabled all plugins (via phpmyadmin), switched to default theme and removed .htaccess file. Nothing. Error 500 still shows up.

    Site is hosted at Godaddy and they are helping as mucho as they can, but we can’t pinpoint the problem. The server’s error log when running the script that triggers the 500 error shows this:

    [Mon Aug 03 18:51:55 2015] [10646159] [core:error] [client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:64568] End of script output before headers: upgrade.php, referer http://my-private-site.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php?_wp_http_referer=%2Fwp-admin%2Fedit-comments.php

    If someone has come across the same problem and got it solved, or at least has any ideas, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

    try MANUAL updating. Download a fresh copy of the WordPress .zip file to your computer, unzip it, and use that to copy up all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. You may need to delete the old copies of files & folder on your server before uploading the new ones. Read the Manual Update directions first.

    Hey Tara, thanks. Nope. Same deal.

    “Database Update Required… ” then click on Update WordPress Database and error 500 shows up.

    Any other ideas?

    – Check the error logs on your server for a more specific error message and see why it’s failing. If you need help locating them, ask your hosting provider to help you with that.

    Tara, server logs return exactly the same error:

    [core:error] [client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:64568] End of script output before headers: upgrade.php, referer http://my-private-site.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php?_wp_http_referer=%2Fwp-admin%2Fedit-comments.php

    Those guys @ Godaddy Support refered me to this WP forums so…

    Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

    I had to “downgrade” all the WP files to the previous version and my site it’s working again. Whole process took me three hours since I tried to update… but at least I was able to get my site back online. I failed to specify that I was trying to upgrade from version 4.1.6 to 4.2.3. Maybe it had to do with it?

    I still want to know why the upgrade didn’t work and why the error 500 was happening, with this entry in the server’s error log:

    End of script output before headers: upgrade.php, referer http://my-private-site.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php?_wp_http_referer=%2Fwp-admin%2Fedit-comments.php

    So if someone knows, please let me know, I’d appreciate it. I want to update to the latest WP version!
