PHP 5.3?

    On activation, I get an error message saying that I must have PHP 5.3.
    I am using latest version of WP, I am hosted on Hostgator, which is on top of all server hosted software.

    Where do I get 5.3 [ it says I currently have 5.2x]? Is this server based software? Is it an addon to WP? Where does it go?
    It would be most helpful if in addition to the error message, it gave some information about PHP to dummies like me that know nothing about it.
