Hi. The last time I enabled prevent hotlinking feature in my cpanel, I got 404 errors every second.

How can I make sure this doesn’t happen? My sites were in the exempt list.

My host told me after re-enabling the feature, I have to recreate the .htaccess by deleting it and making a new one, and setting permissions to 640.

But I don’t trust them because they don’t use WordPress as much as you guys. What is your advice on this?

An option I like is the Hotlink Protection Plugin. What is doesn’t do is prevent hotlinking. What it does do is serve an alternate image. You can use the default image it comes with or create your own. (use your imagination here)

Saurus, the link you gave was very helpful for other rules as well!

My pleasure – I’ve posted that link in many questions before. As usual – people who don’t immediately need info on .htaccess don’t read and bookmark it:) It IS very helpful in many ways.

And still, 10 months later, its useful as ever. Thanks.
