How my mysql calls does Collapsing Archives make?

How many mysql calls does Collapsing Archives make when a page loads? I’m trying to track down the reason my site keeps triggering a 75000/hour mysql limit (and bringing down the site) when it’s a small site with not a lot of dynamic content. I have about 180 posts over a 5 year period. Is the archive making that many mysql calls (to get the title of each post, etc.) or even several mysql calls per post? I can’t figure out what might cause this problem, but I was hoping to get a better understanding of how Collapsing Archives works (such as if it caches it’s menu, or if it does make many calls per page load). Thank you.
