Despite all my efforts to guarantee you all a smooth upgrade from Seamless Donations 3.3 to 4.0, things didn’t quite work out as planned. If you are experiencing upgrade problems, white screen of death, or hangs while trying to update the plugin, here’s what you need to do.

If you haven’t tried updating yet

If you haven’t tried updating yet, here’s the set of steps you should take. First, go to your Plugins page and deactivate Seamless Donations. Then delete the plugin. Refresh your plugins page (this is very important, make sure to refresh). Now you can Add New and bring Seamless Donations 4.0 onto your site.

If you tried updating and are experiencing problems

If you are no longer able to deactivate the plugin from the Plugins dashboard, you will need to remove the seamless-donations folder from your wp-content/plugins folder using FTP or your file manager on your server.

Once you’ve done that, go back to the plugins page in WordPress. You will probably see an error message like this: “The plugin seamless-donations/dgx-donate.php has been deactivated due to an error: Plugin file does not exist.” This is good. This is what you want to see. If you don’t see this message, make sure you refresh the plugins page. Again, it’s very important that you refresh the page once you’ve removed the seamless-donations folder.

Now, go ahead and Add New and download.

Additional details on why this is happening can be read here.

I am so sorry, folks. I really tried to make this a seamless upgrade.

  • Thanks for the info David,

After upgrading to 4.0, the donation form is simply not showing anymore. The page is blank. I tried uninstalling/refreshing…

Any idea of how to fix this? Thanks

The troubleshooting guide at http://zatzlabs.com/project/seamless-donations-troubleshooting-guide/ should help you out.

If not, please start a fresh support post and I’ll do what I can to help out. It’s best to use new posts because they’re more visible and we can track resolved or not. This is just a notification post.

There was a Seamless Donations update notice in our wordpress today and when I ran the update, the entire site (admin and public side) died with a blank white screen that says “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.” We had only just installed the Seamless Donation plugin a few days and had the most recent version (prior to today’s update). Any idea what’s up with this? I read the above about a previous update that killed sites, so given what’s happened today, I’m a now a little hesitant to continuing using the plugin. I’ve worked on dozens of WP sites and used lots of plugin but never had one kill an entire site before – it’s a bit unnerving.

Update: after several minutes we were able to get back into the admin site and it’s now displaying a message that says “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update again now”, so things seem to have partially recovered on their. I guess the question is, should I let WP try the update again or cut my losses and uninstall the plugin?

Don’t uninstall the plugin (as in run the uninstaller option from your browser). If you’re in an indeterminate state, then uninstalling might do… not sure.

I’ve had that second message happen once in a while after running updates. Not of my plugin, but just in general. I’ve had to go back to my hosting provider and ask what’s up.

It’s probably not the plugin (although there was a relatively big update — I updated a library I use, which has a bunch of files). It’s possible that the big update caused some issues.

Probably the best and most reliable approach would be to remove the seamless-donations folder from plugins via FTP or a file manager interface, and then download (rather than update) the version from the repository and FTP it up.

Let me know if you run into further problems. Do me a favor, though, and launch it as a separate thread. I don’t normally watch this thread since it’s pretty much old.
