Name as Post Title

Greetings! I am working on a contact list-type CPT. I’ve set up a Pod called student with fields student_first_name and student_last_name. Currently there is no title saved with each post as we’ve disabled the Title field. What we’d like to do is have the student’s first and last name show up as the title and be displayed in the CPT list.

I have tried the following code http://pastebin.com/RbzwDzeS. It works fine if I set the $post_title to a string, but when I try to use the Pods data, it doesn’t want to work. This seems to be a failing in my understanding of how to access the Pods data. Can you provide any guidance as to what I need to change to make it work? What am I missing?
