Increase Website Speeds without Plugins

I am helping a number of companies that are all having the same problems when I put them under Google Developer Tools speedtest. It isn’t necessarily the hosting server unless it is for all hosting servers because these websites are on several different servers including Azure, GoDaddy, HostGator, and ZZhosting.

They are all coming up slow and showing problems with things like caching, render-blocking java script and CSS in above-the-fold content, and compression. These are all labeled in red as “Should Fix”

So I’ve tried to make these changes quickly using plugins as quick-fixes but that actually seems to slow the site down even more.

Then I also get the yellow prompt for “Consider Fixing” which is related to minifying CSS, JavaScript and HTML.

I want to know how to handle some of these things at the root because plugins don’t seem to work.

All suggestions are appreciated.

Also, I apologize if there is another topic opened for this. I’m new to the forum and tried to find something similar but couldn’t

Slowness could be due to (but not limited to):
– A poor or memory intensive theme. Switch to the WordPress default theme and test loading time and see if you see a difference. If you do, may be your theme can be re-written to be more efficient.
– Poor or memory intensive plugins. One by one disable plugins and test loading time and see if you see a difference. If you do, may be that plugin can be re-written to be more efficient.
– your server is slow (e.g., “process hang”, overload, you get a lot of visitors, other problems, etc.); generally, every inexpensive host out there is slow.
– lots of images.

Actual fit the themes, I’m using the default WordPress theme for one. I’m using mostly Divi theme for the rest.

I have contacted one of the hosting companies and they said the speed of the service is running perfect from their end.

I’ve tried composing images as well. I was met with some success by physically compressing them but I tried to use a program to compress without losing quality and that didn’t speed the site up.

Some of the main things I’m curious about is how to enable caching without using a plugin and how to handle the java and css above the fold. Anyone know?
