I have same problem efter update from 1.9 to 2.1… So I rollback to 1.9 from backup.
I rolled back and now the galleries show again.
BUT…
I cannot move images from one gallery to another now.
I check the images I want to move, select bulk actions / move to and click apply.
Then the screen gets all dark (see photo) and I cannot do a thing.
What´s up with that ?
I did I rollback but now I cannot move images from one gallery to another. if I do a bulk action, the screen gets black and I cannot do a thing:

@madniac – Rolling back to NextGEN Legacy versions from current NextGEN Gallery versions is generally not recommended nor supported.

What is NGG using when the screen gets black ? Javascript ? XML ? It clearly must be a problem with this. In older versions of WordPress I didn’t have this problem.
(As for installing an older version of NGG, it is vital that the galleries om my site function). I cannot do troubleshooting for days on end and in the meantime have the galleries down. That is why I rolled back to an older version. I will gladly install the newer version again once it doesn’t disappear my galleries.

@jenniferluetz – Do you have a multisite installation? Did you check the images folder path? (Other Options -> Image options).
In previous versions by default was wp-content/gallery/ ,but in the last update they changed to wp-content/uploads/sites/%BLOG_ID%/nggallery/
I had exactly same problem and the issue was there, I’ve changed the path again and now everything is working perfectly.
@orionrigel – Thanks for sharing!
